This course features plush, generous fairways and fast greens that are medium-sized. The signature hole is #7, a 172-yard, par 3, requiring a tee shot over a rocky ditch to the green.
Rio Salado Golf Course plays to a 9-hole par of 34 and a maximum 9-hole distance of 2,358 yards. The course rating is 61.6 with a slope rating of 105.
The course closed in 2014.
Kemper Sports Management formerly operated the golf course, which was one of three municipal courses in the Tempe area. However, the company announced in 2012 it would not renew the lease, prompting the city of Tempe to seek a new operator for the 63-acre property located in the Indian Bend Wash outlet near Miller Road.
In May 2014, the Tempe City Council authorized Mayor Mark Mitchell to sign a lease agreement with Singh to transform Rio Salado into a sustainable urban farm and community space. The lease is valid for 10 years and includes the potential for renewal.
